80s Music So Many Memories

Today we are bringing you another decade of music and moving into the 1980s, often voted the most favourite of all eras; well it was for us anyway!

(Were you one of those people who really wanted these two stars to sing together? In 1988 they finally made their fans so happy, and released this cheesy love song.)

So many memories and so many great singers, bands and styles; what with the stars of the 1970s still very much on the scene and re-inventing themselves! I will try to include as much as I can!.

The 1980s saw the emergence of pop, dance music and New Wave.
Fashion changed again an saw extra bright skirts, leg and arm warmers  and the extra use of ribbons in girls hair!  There was an overload of denim and slogan T-shirts were everywhere!
I bet there will be someone reading this blog now who owned a white T-Shirt that said "Relax" on it, either that or "Frankie Says" plastered on it.

These "Relax" T Shirts were bought to life Frankie Goes To Hollywood. This was a group fronted by male vocalist Holly Johnson with Keyboard player Paul Rutherford also providing vocals. The group's 1983 debut single "Relax" was banned by the BBC in 1984 while at number six in the charts, and then topped the UK singles chart for five consecutive weeks. It went on to enjoy prolonged chart success throughout that year and ultimately became the seventh best-selling UK single of all time. They also enjoyed success with hits such as "Two Tribes" and "The Power of Love"

Another T-Shirt you may have owned would of stated "Choose Life" This was a favourite with the Band Wham! Wham was a duo formed by Andrew Ridgeley and a certain well known singer by the name of George Michael. Wham had many hits including "Bad Boys" (1983) "Club Tropicana "(1983) The one that everybody knows and is a popular choice with wedding Djs "Wake Me Up"(1984).

Not forgetting the well loved Christmas hit "Last Christmas"(1984)  George Michael continues with his controversial music career today where as Andrew Rideley didn't seem to follow the same path.
Many people think that Wham were around for the whole of the 1980s? In fact they only performed as a duo from 1982 to 1986!

As the term disco began to fade in the early part of the 1980s, styles such as post-disco,  Euro disco and dance-pop became more popular.
Rock music continued to remain strong with it’s fans and enjoy a wide audience. Sub-genres such as Soft Rock, New Wave, and glam metal  with it’s unmistakable heavy distortion, pinch harmonics and whammy bar abuse became very popular.

I have also researched and found out that the distant Adult contemporary, quiet storm, and smooth jazz began to gain popularity. When you think of the 1980s songs, the music and the whole era itself; Smooth Jazz isn't even thought of!

Speaking of which, and to give you another example of how some styles and songs aren't even thought of in the 1980s. Mr Luther Vandross released one of his most well known smoothest songs of all "Never too much"
Ok this may have been 1981 right at the start, but 1980s all the same. I bet if you asked anyone to say "When this song was about?" 1970s would probably be the reply!

A lot of the 1980s songs, commonly used digital recording, and plenty of use of synthesizers, with synth pop music and other electronic genres .
There was less use of traditional instruments in songs and more use of fake instrument sounds, false noise and electro synth use. Interesting electro sounds taking the place of where instruments were once heard, especially in the intervals of songs!

Remember the 1987 Simple Minds Hit "Don't you forget about me". Simple Minds were a Scottish Rock band formed by Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill in 1977. An example of how bands had to adapt, as the 1970s ended and the new age of the 1980s came along. Simple Minds also performed the hit associated with football "Alive and Kicking" (1985)  and went on to perform Stadium Rock from 1984-1991.

With respect to Simple Minds, if I asked you to name me the 1980s Pop Duo who used this synth electric sound more than anyone, and were probably the best at it (personal thought) you could tell me easily? Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, better known as The Pet Shop Boys. Synth Pop, Dance Pop and certainly New Wave. This duo had it all. Forming in 1981and still touring now, The Pet Shop Boys had so many hits in the 1980s. These include "Suburbia" (1986) "What Have I Done To Deserve This" (1987) "It's A Sin" (1987)  the well known "West End Girls" (1986) and even in 1988, mixing up Elvis Presley's "Always On My Mind"

Also during the 1980s, several major electronic genres were developed, including  techno, electro, freestyle, house and interesting Euro dance, Some of these continued into the 1990s.

Throughout the decade of the 1980s, R&B, hip hop and urban styles were becoming more common, particularly in large metropolitan cities and in the more inner city areas.  Rap was especially successful towards the end of the 1980s with the coming of the golden age of hip hop.
Thinking about it, who can remember the 1984 film Break Dance?

Like all of the 1980s,  there are so many well known artists who performed Rap, Hip Hop or Rnb. I will try to mention a few. Well aim towards my own personal favourites!
Artists such as The Sugar Hill Gang, Diana Ross, Kool & The Gang, Shalamar, The Beastie Boys, Atlantic Starr.
Also there were the emergence of Artists who continued well into the 1990s. Bobby Brown,
Salt n Peppa, LL Cool J, Eddie Grant and Public Enemy but to name a few!

These urban styles, more so rap and hip hop; would continue their rise in popularity through the 1990s and 2000s. Still running today with not much adjustment to the original 1980s songs.
The 1980s saw the reinvention of Michael Jackson, the superstardom of Prince and the emergence of simply amazing female artists.

A certain girl by the name of Madonna took the world by storm and still does today. Madonna was certainly the pop star that every girl wanted to be, and she was certainly the one to beat in the 1980s. Hit songs such as "Holiday" (1983) "Like A Virgin" (1984) "Into The Groove" (1984) "Material Girl" (1984) and the huge "Like A Prayer" used by Coca Cola in their advertising campaign in 1989. She also enjoyed film success starring in Desperately Seeking Susan in 1985 and had many more roles later.
I wont write too much about it, but sadly Madonna's last TV come back appearance didn't (Go Down) so well!

When it comes to beautiful, flawless, big voices, the late great Whitney Houston came into her own. Also like Madonna enjoying so many chart hits and film appearances.
Janet Jackson was also storming the charts, although sadly she seems to be very unsung nowadays.
The trio of Madonna, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson were the most successful female artists during the 1980s. Their videos became a permanent fixture on MTV and gained a worldwide mass audience.

You may wonder why I have not written a huge amount on Michael Jackson, after all he owned the 1980s and the charts with pretty much every song he released. He was the King of Pop! I know that and you know that, but for me to just touch on a percentage of what MJ achieved in the 1980s; that in itself would be a completely new Blog. But so you fans don't get too upset let me mention a few things about MJ in the 1980s decade. Come to think of it, this may be useful if you ever get asked it in a quiz!

What was the first song MJ released in the 1980s?  Answer "She's Out Of My Life"
So not one of the most popular ones but still almost hitting the top of the UK chart, with its highest position of number 3. It was even lower in the U.S chart only reaching number 10.
So what was the last song he released in the 1980s? Again not another popular one "Liberian Girl" in 1989, this only reaching number 13 in the UK chart and not even getting in the U.S top 50!

With regards to between the beginning and the end of the 1980s, "Beat it", "Thriller",
"I just Can't Stop Loving You" "Billie Jean", "Bad" well you know all about those don't you? Or do you? Do you remember that "Thriller" only reached number 10 in the UK chart? In fact MJ only had three UK Number 1s in the 1980s! "One Day In Your Life" (1981) "Billie Jean" (1982) and "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" in early 1987.

For all others in the 1980s, Again as I said at the start of this Blog, where do I begin? Lets go for some of the more well known names. But on saying that, what is well known to one may not be as well loved by the next person.

Phil Collins enjoyed his best spell as a solo artist as did the likes of Shakin Stevens, Rick Astley and Adam Ant now who could forget them? What about the brilliant Paul Young, Annie Lennox, Blondie, Irena Cara, Boy George and his Culture Club?  Tiffany and "I Think We're Alone Now" what a girl's hairbrush favourite.

There were many 1970s stars still in the charts. Abba, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder,
Barbara Streisand, Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard, The Bee Gees, The Police and giants Queen .

With regards to the bands or duos, the fantastic list goes on. Lets start with my personal favourite Duran Duran! Then Dexys Midnight Runners, Human League, Soft Cell, Survivor, Musical Youth, Aswad, Chaka Khan, The Bangles, Bananarama and Euro Vision Great Bucks Fizz. What with Ska style bands like Madness and The Specials having a great time in the 1980s and still a (Dad's) wedding preference to this day

Artists and bands who would enjoy more success in the 1990s were now on the scene.
Wet Wet Wet, Bros, New Kids on the block, Yazz and Lisa Stansfield for example..

The 1980s also saw the idea that well loved soap stars could quite possibly take the charts by storm both in their own countries and abroad. A certain Jason Donovan had a good go at this with a new pop princess wanting to be (So Lucky) too in 1988.  She had a duo with Jason and then completely left him behind wondering what might have been?
As she continued to be a huge star, Mr Donovan was left asking the question "Why didn't she treat him the same as she did on neighbours"?

You should know who that was? If it helps, we named our first cat after her!

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST MEMORY OF THE 1980S MUSIC ERA OR IS THERE ANYTHING MAJOR I HAVE FORGOT?

Guest Blog Miss Holiday Swing, The Project

“I say Old Bean!” It’s wonderful to meet you! Let’s start by introducing myself. My name is Miss Holiday Swing but my friends call me Holly!

A mere 5 months ago I started the “Miss Holiday Swing” project. A project that had been in the pipeline for some time, but having been sailing the seven seas for the last 2 years        (give or take a few weeks), had been postponed. I should probably explain….

Back in May this year I returned from being a Featured Soloist in one of the many Show Ensembles with Aida Cruises. 2 years I am so thankful for, as the experiences and friends I made; will last me a lifetime! And they are the company that gave Miss Swing her first show! In my first contract, all singers had their own solo programme for which I chose to create a show full of 1940’s music, and it was the birth of something great! However, in my next contract the solo shows were no more, and although I had an absolute blast singing the likes of Tina Turner, The Jackson Five, Lionel Richie, The Blues Brothers and Abba, I missed those toe tapping tunes of an era I hold so dear to my heart!

So once I had my feet firmly on dry land again, I threw myself into getting gigs and performances as Miss Holiday Swing, getting my name and face out there for everyone to see! I decided I needed a whole new image, a website, flyers, business cards, the whole “kitten caboodle!”

The first step was getting some new pictures taken and I already knew the lady perfect for the job! I was familiar with Libby Christensen Photography when she’d taken my professional headshots a few years ago, not to mention the couple of years we’d spent working together front of house at a few theatres in London. Thankfully Libby agreed to help me with my new look and with some combined ideas of what we both had in mind we set out on our London adventure!

This is the beauty of Libby’s work… she has no studio. She works entirely off natural light, natural settings and combined with her amazing eye the results…. Well they speak for themselves! I challenge you to see if you recognize any of the locations we visited…?

I urge anybody with any photographic needs to contact Libby! She makes you feel very comfortable, often over a cup of tea (and I LOVE a cup of tea!), and she’s extremely thorough so you’d never leave with anything you didn’t want!

The next step was the website. Again this recommendation came through Libby. Christopher Jay Designs had also created her website. Chris worked on a whole brand build with me and I tell ya! Having still to this day never met the guy, he did a fantastic job of getting to know what I liked and expected from my business! I’m also pretty clueless when it comes to technical jargon of the computer industry and he was extremely patient.

There was a lot of to and fro emails between us, which may seem like a long process but well worth the wait when the results were exactly, if not more than what I asked for. He started with my logo design and built the website around the colours and feel of that. During which he created a business card and flyer. I hope he wont mind me saying, but I believe he keeps his costs quite low, so he comes highly recommended from me for anyone starting a new business, or even if you want to give your existing business a revamp!

Finally I have been busy in a recording studio in Sevenoaks in Kent called SuPeRec Productions. Run by two musicians called Suzi and Peter who go above and beyond their duties! I first went to them for a professionally recorded Demo to send out to potential clients. I spent around 9 hours in the studio and got 6 songs recorded and mastered on both a CD and in an MP3 format.

I then went back a month later as it was clear from the gigs I was performing at that there was a need for an album! So I called upon their services again for four more tracks. I was looked after so well, always refreshed with water or tea when I needed it, Suzi even made a delicious dinner when Peter and I could tear ourselves away for a break! I must take this moment to thank Peter who helped with some spontaneous harmonies on some of the tracks. He sat there with his guitar and strummed out each harmony from ear. A task that can be harrowing at the best of times let alone when you’re tired from a long day! So, thank you.

And I suppose that’s what this blog is all about!  A HUGE thank you to those that have been part of my journey this year and to whom have helped me have a very busy 5 months performing nearly every weekend! Here’s to the festive season ahead!

Links to all these fabulous people can be found on my website www.missholidayswing.co.uk. Oh! And this is probably a fantastic time to mention that “Introducing Miss Swing…” the album has arrived this very morning and is available for you to purchase at just £5 (excl. postage) Again get in touch via the website for your copy!

Hope to see you at one of my gigs sometime! Be sure to say hello!
All the best,

53 Years of James Bond & The Title Songs

Well this blog is a little different from what we would normally do but we also have a feeling it will be loved by many! Also with he new Bond Film Spectre launching we thought, Let's get it out there.

Acting, Entertainment and Music go hand...fact, and a prime example of this is in films! Either a song will promote a fourth coming film, or more often than not; the film will promote a song and artist.

This can be a major thing for any artist or band and a good film will often allow them to score a chart hit.

A franchise of films can be even better and there is no other franchise better than James Bond!

Many music stars will often dream of the day that the producers of the Bond franchise will be knocking on the door.

Although it only seems to be the more recent Bond Film Titles that scored high chart positions.

But it seems to be with James Bond films, that the chart position for the Artist or Band may not really matter at all. The fact that they performed the Title Song for the next legendary 007 film is enough in itself!

So we decided to put this blog together.

The 25th Bond film "Spectre" is due out very soon, actually may already be by the time you read this blog. So we are giving you all the title songs for each film and links to the You tube video.
Also there is a little more information to go with each one. Chances are there will be some James Bond masterminds who can real off all the information for each one anyway.

So far there have been six actors who have played the part of James Bond but many more Artists and Bands. As you read through below you will see that the legendary Shirley Bassey seems to be the queen of the 007 Title Songs.

The 70s Music Fever

So we move another decade along from the swinging groovy 1960s and come into the Disco Music Fever era that was the 1970s.

The music at the beginning of the 1970s was strongly influenced by 1960s music but sadly for some fans the psychedelic rock movement quickly fell into decline. More so people think of the 1970s and they think Disco!  Artists like The Bee Gees, Candy Staton, Earth Wind & Fire, Le Freak and Gloria Gaynor prompting the memories, but there was also a great deal of soft rock produced by artists such as Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Elton John,  Billy Joel and a stunning lady by the name of Cher.

Southern Rock was still going strong and there was developments in punk and new romantic music that was to strongly continued into the 1980s.
A great deal of the rock & roll music produced in the 1960s continued to develop and influence new groups who were switching decades and moving into the 1970s. Plenty of these groups and performers engaged in extravagant and theatrical dress. Big theatrical presentations by artists, of live music, including David Bowie, Kiss and of course Queen.

This type of 1970s music also developed into stadium rock, with performers like Boston, Led Zeppelin and Styx creating music intended for large arena audiences. Not many people know and assume as 1960s only,  but The Rolling Stones and The Beatles were still topiing the charts. Don't forget one man by the name of Elvis Presley could fill an arena on his own!!

Again Disco is, perhaps, the most iconic movement within 1970s music. It quickly grew and developed within dance clubs. It was written and designed with beats and ready rythms, ideal for dancing. No messages, no underlying reasons, just non stop dancing. Best of all,  on a multi coloured dance floor!. Disco quickly gained fame and popularity, especially with the release of the movie Saturday Night Fever in 1977. Almost as quickly, disco became one of the most reviled forms of 1970s music in the US, and many musicians who found fame with disco had difficulty continuing anywhere the same sort of success into the 1980s

The music in the 70s  also included a number of other musical movements, including continued development of folk music through artists such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and The Carpenters .    R&B and soul were also quite popular with artists like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Wilson Pickett, Kool and the Gang, the amazing Stevie Wonder and many many more  . Some musicians, such as George Clinton, mixed up R&B familiarity with rock and synthesized these styles to create music referred to as funk. Songs such as Superstition by Stevie Wonder.

Speaking of funk, there was one group who took the world by storm with Funk, Soul and Pop. They had everything! This was the one and only Jackson Five. The 1970s was another brilliant decade for them as thy wowed the crowds with their songs and slick dance routines. But it was towards the end of the 1970s decade that saw Michael Jackson consider a solo career!

For some reason the 1970s doesn't seem to be reflected on by people as a brilliant decade for music, when compared to the 1960s or 1980s. It seems to be mostly remembered for the Disco music and the dance moves of John Travolta. I'm sure many of you have gone to a fancy dress party, wearing flares, a big medalion and a false hairy chest; whilst asking the DJ to put one song on so you can point one finger in the air and recreate those iconic moves!

But if not Mr Travolta, then for many the 1970s decade will be remembered as the decade that a certain  group was formed in 1972 in Stockholm Sweden. That's right Agnetha, Anni, Benny and Bjorn went on as Abba, won the Eurovision song contest in 1974 and pretty much took over the world.  So for all of you who aren't sure of the 1970s but love Abba and a bit of Dancing Queen, that's right you can thank this decade! Research has shown that Abba are the most recreated group ever by Tribute Acts and Groups! Well deserved too as we "Thank them for the music"

So for those of you reading this blog who are old enough, hopefully it will help you remember that the 1970s decade had so much more, with so many brilliant songs performed by unbelievable artists and bands..
For all you younger readers. If you do your research you will find that many of the bands and artists you may like today were well on their way to stardom back in the 1970s, or by now very established. So many artists and bands who's careers continued well after the 1970s and remain household names today!  Be honest, how many times have you watched the Mama Mia Film or Saturday Night Fever?

What was your memories or favourites of the 1970s? We welcome your comments!

Guest Blog From Verity Smith A Female Vocalist and her Over Seas Experience

Overseas Experiences

Gigging overseas seems like a glamorous prospect; new places, new people, new food and new experiences – and it totally is all of those things - but it’s also a lot more - hard work, long days, lots of money and not a lot of sleep!

A couple of weeks ago, I embarked on a trip to mid-France with the UK based theatre company, Caamora, to take part in a Gala Concert. The French contingent (as we like to call them!) even made us special wine for the event, so French and so appreciated! We had all had our scripts and music ahead of time and last minute rehearsals were planned for the day before our trip. As typical with all rehearsals, perhaps 25% of the lyrics weren’t recalled and once we’d been over it 12,000,000 times it reached 10pm, everyone had finally arrived and run their songs, so we ordered pizza and settled down for the night.

ALARM! 5am!!

On the road at 6am and catch the Eurostar first thing, we travelled through France only delayed for an hour by the interesting Syrian issues at the border. By 17:00 we were finally at our hosts’ house. On this occasion we were lucky enough to avoid the dodgy Travelodge experience of doom that normally faces musicians away from home, and were being looked after by one of the event organisers – luxury! Wine and food kindly awaited our arrival - we were all very pleased to have this, and our beds, waiting! But first we had to unload the van UUUGH! So, onward, to the venue, and only then FINALLY with the PA and musical instruments all unloaded, back for pasta and delicious BED!

Morning, slowly we surface, I am more than usually the first up so I sat drinking lovely coffee while our French friends busied themselves with breakfast around me. We were treated to a wonderful continental breakfast, setting us up ready for another long day ahead.
The venue was open from 11 am, and despite not being on until 8pm (or possibly later!) we needed to get there and sound-check as soon as possible. There were two support acts, also using the venue for setting up and sound-checking, and being more local to the French area than us we were using a lot of their for our set… and so we waited.
Something I have noticed about gigging, no matter what level, is that there is always a LOT of waiting. You can become a literal expert at Angry Birds, or get through many chapters of a good book in a day.

Finally (perhaps 2.5 hours later?) we got to run though a few of songs, getting the levels and performance perfected for the evening… and then Lunch! The nice thing about gigging in France, or in fact any European country I’ve been to, is that you are VERY well looked after! And then… more waiting!
So…  the time for the gig was finally here, I’m ready (after many minutes doing my face and many more attempting to get into a corset!) – time for pre-gig selfies, Instagram, Facebook, and vocal warm-ups …  SO important, especially if you have a big voice like I do, and even more important is no wine before the gig (sob!) … and the social media aspect is so important to me too, I really want to feel connected to peopol who listen to me sing.

We sit and appreciate the talent of our predecessors, each of the warm up acts is as great as the next, and looking fabulous to boot. The crowd are on board and really happy to be there, the evening is clement (unlike England!), and then - we’re on!

The gig is FABULOUS! I even receive a standing ovation for one of my songs! People are cheering, singing along and  generally enjoying themselves. Every second is perfect, even those where I’m questioning how well I did in my head, did I get the words right? Did my voice crack here, or did I intonate properly there? But it’s wonderful, and in the blink of eye, it’s gone.

It always amazes me, the amount of time, effort, passion and indeed money, that goes into these events, and they’re over so quickly – even more so if you’re the one on stage! But then afterwards, the wine flows with the conversation, new friends are made and happiness is visible throughout audience.

 I LOVE my job!!
Despite the long days, hard work, waiting, travel and days required to recover, I love this
